So, determining
your curl pattern if you have curly hair is the first step to taking care of
your hair, whether it is in a protective style or simply blowing in the wind. I
know that all the “4C, 3F, 9JYL” jargon can get hard to understand so I’ve
dedicated a post to breaking it all down in simple easy to understand language.
I’ve even included pictures!
THERE ARE FOUR TYPES OF CURLY HAIR (2, 3, 4):
(TYPE 1
Hair is assumed to be straight)
TYPE 2:
WAVY HAIR
Think
more beach waves than curly when you picture this hair type. Maintaining curls
for this curl pattern can be difficult due to the fact that heat damage,
dehydration, and other stress on the hair can straighten out your culrs.
2A: The
hair tends to be slightly “S”-shaped.
2B: The
hair is “S”- shaped but curls closer to the scalp and sticks closer to the
head.
2C: Hair
curls closer to the scalp and remains loosely curled to the ends.
TYPE 3:
CURLY HAIR
3A: This
curly hair pattern has more of a loopy consistency with a the “S”-pattern.
These curls are tighter than 2C’s because the curls usually have a
circumference the size of two fingers put together.
3B: This
pattern tends to have thicker hair and curls that are stretched at the root so the
hair resembles a wavier pattern until the end where the curl is definite and
tighter (think the size of a pen or marker). This curly hair pattern tends to
be heavier.
3C: This
curl pattern resembles the circumference of a pencil and tighter waves from
root to tip. It tends to get frizzier than all other curl patterns.
TYPE 4:
THE KINKY CURLY HAIR
4A: This
hair pattern tends to be tightly coiled with an “S” pattern but its curl pattern
is easily visible in comparison to 4B’s and 4C’s. This hair type is highly
dense.
4B: This
hair pattern has a “Z” pattern and the hair bends in sharp angles. The hair can
be described as wiry and coarse and also experience shrinkage between 70-75%.
4C: This
hair type will never clump without styling products and ranges between thin and
coarse strands. There is less definition and the hair is dense, experiencing
shrinkage from 75%-80%
