5 CONFESSIONS OF GOING NATURAL

So, I have a deep respect for those who went natural and stayed natural without folding and just braiding it up. Right now, as of March 7th, I joined the sorrowful ghosts of naturals past and got Senegalese twists.Without a doubt,  It was the best decision for my hair because it was breaking off no matter what I did! No amount of oil or conditioning could stop the terrible process and eventually I had to make the decision that being natural is a roller coster and you have both good days and bad days. But I compiled this list of things I learned during the process, both good and bad, and also a little insight on what people should know if they're thinking about going natural.

#1.)NO ONE TELLS YOU HOW MUCH YOU MOISTURIZE

Okay, So obviously moisturizing is an obvious one because your hair is exposed to the elements. But sometimes even moisturizing once a day is not enough. All oils are not created equal. You have your olive oils, castor oils, and grapeseed oils that are heavy on your hair and make it shine ( sometimes even make it greasy) but don't moisturize your hair if you're scalp is already dry. Those oils seal in moisture thats already there. You need to alternate between lighter oils like coconut oil that penetrate the hair follicle easily, and then heavier ones to seal in that moisture. It's a lot of work but if you do it right, the result is worth it.

#2.) DON'T WEAR YOUR HAIR DOWN IN WINTER

Wearing your hair down is cute, but you want to know what isn't? Sweeping it all off the floor as it falls out all around you. Even if your have a good moisturizing regime, there is such thing as too cold. Protective styles must become your best friend if you're going to make it through the winter! It's okay to fold and admit you've met your match against the weather if it will keep all your hair on your head. Just because you don't have a fro doesn't mean you're not killin' the game.

#3.) CO-WASHING IS JUST AS GOOD, IF NOT BETTER

Shampooing dries your hair out which is good if you have hair that gets oily quickly, but for my curl endowed we can stretch our washes to make sure we don't dry our hair out. OR, we can co-wash which is quickly becoming a new phenomenon amongst hair-care professionals. Instead of just using your conditioner and not shampooing, we can now buy co-wash products that specialize in co-washes. YAY! The co-wash I'm using now is by L'Oreal called ever-cream and it does wonders.

#4.) DONT BE AFRAID TO BEND THE RULES A LITTLE

Heat is made out to be the bad guy amongst naturals because too much will destroy you're curl pattern and kill your edges and ends. But we're females who like to look cute and get bored with our hair pretty quickly. There are minimalist heat styles that go a long way to helping you change up your look without needing you to completely straighten your entire head. For example braiding your hair and then running a flat iron over the braid to help you get some waves. There are more ideas on my Pinterest page, check it out!

#5.) WRAP IT UP

Lastly, its good to wrap up your hair when you sleep because the cotton on your pillow sheets can strip your hair of natural oils. That's all something we know to a certain degree. But I did a little research into hair wraps and ran across this product called Sharmooz which specializes in decorative wraps that utilize technology that helps lock in the moisture of your hair. They also make pillow cases, bonnets, and specialized hair wraps for sleep that make the whole process easier when you forget to wrap. The product has swept through Louisiana and I've been sleeping on my pillow case for about two years. Check it out, it doesn't disappoint!

These were a couple of things I thought of while walking through the city and decided to share with you guys. The products I endorsed in this blog post are things I actually use. I wasn't paid to write about them:) Please feel free to comment about things you feel others should know about going/being  natural. It isn't a struggle if you do it right, and I feel fostering a community that does it right is the first step to being women who kill it on the sidewalk!
